South Africa’s bowling arsenal has been dealt a blow with the pectoral muscle injury sustained by fast bowler Gerald Coetzee during a T20 International against Namibia. The injury forced him from the field mid-match, raising significant concerns about his readiness for the impending white-ball series in Pakistan. This development puts further pressure on the Proteas’ pace depth.

The 23-year-old speedster had to abandon his bowling after just 1.3 overs due to the injury. Cricket South Africa has confirmed that Coetzee will undergo further medical evaluation upon his return, with his participation in the ODIs and T20Is against Pakistan now uncertain. This comes at a time when the team is already without emerging talent Kwena Maphaka, who is also sidelined for the Namibia T20I and the full Pakistan tour with a hamstring strain.

Coetzee has had a challenging period with injuries, including a recent absence due to a groin complaint that saw him miss the Champions Trophy. His selection for the Pakistan tour represented his return to national contention. With important series and tournaments on the horizon, the Proteas will be anxiously awaiting news on Coetzee’s recovery and hoping their fast-bowling unit can remain intact for the demanding international schedule ahead.
