Protecting the Skies: India’s Bodyguard Satellites Initiative

India is embarking on a significant initiative to enhance its space security through the development of ‘bodyguard satellites.’ These satellites will act as guardians, protecting India’s space assets from potential threats and attacks by rival nations. The government is investing approximately ₹27,000 crore (USD 3 billion) in this project, which includes the launch of about 50 surveillance satellites, with the first one planned for deployment in 2026. These satellites will function akin to the S400 defense system, shielding Indian satellites from space-based threats. India currently operates a substantial fleet of over 100 satellites, compared to Pakistan’s 8 and China’s extensive network exceeding 930. China’s rapid advancement in space technology poses a strategic challenge to India, compounded by ongoing border disputes, exemplified by the 2020 Galwan clash. The May 2025 conflict between India and Pakistan also highlighted China’s provision of satellite support to Pakistan, driving India to rapidly bolster its space security capabilities. The government is actively collaborating with startup companies to develop new technologies, including LiDAR-based satellites designed to detect threats in advance, thereby allowing timely defensive responses. Complementing this, ground-based radar and telescope systems are under development to ensure round-the-clock surveillance. The crucial role of space security was demonstrated during Operation Sindoor in May 2025. This proactive move signifies India’s commitment to space as a crucial defense arena, in response to the increasing space capabilities of both Pakistan and China.
