By India Today Web Desk: A US sports activities journalist, who’s in Qatar to cowl the FIFA World Cup, claimed that he was briefly detained by safety workers after he wore a rainbow t-shirt to the US’s World Cup opener in opposition to Wales on Tuesday.

The tweet by Grant Wahl, the journalist, brought on a furore on social media, with many lending him help whereas others, principally Qatari nationals, education him to respect the “culture of the region”.

Dr Nayef bin Nahar, an outspoken Qatari educational, mentioned, “As a Qatari I’m proud of what happened. I don’t know when will the westerners realize that their values aren’t universal. There are other cultures with different values that should be equally respected. Let’s not forget that the West is not the spokesperson for humanity.”

Earlier, Grant Wahl had tweeted that he was stopped from getting into the stadium for the US-Wales recreation. “Just now: Security guard refusing to let me into the stadium for USA-Wales. “You have to change your shirt. It’s not allowed,” he tweeted.

He was later detained when he tried to enter the stadium whereas sporting a rainbow shirt in help of the LGBTQIA+ neighborhood in a rustic the place same-sex relations are unlawful.

Grant claimed his telephone was taken away when he tweeted concerning the incident. He was then detained for 25 minutes and advised to take away his t-shirt.
