During a joint press conference in Alaska, Vladimir Putin stated his belief that the conflict in Ukraine would have been prevented had Donald Trump been US President in 2022. This statement echoed the views of Trump, who holds his successor, Joe Biden, accountable for the war. Putin explained that he had previously cautioned then-President Biden against allowing the situation to reach a critical point in 2022. Putin described the recent talks with Trump as constructive and respectful. He emphasized the close geographical relationship between the US and Russia. Putin also mentioned Alaska’s historical ties to both countries. Putin noted that relations between the US and Russia are at a low point but that he and Trump have maintained direct communication. He added that Trump’s Special Envoy, Steve Witkoff, had traveled to Russia for discussions, and advisors from both sides stayed in contact, with a focus on Ukraine. The summit between the two leaders generated considerable excitement in Russia, reflected in the media coverage.
