Russia claims Ukrainian forces attempted a drone attack on a presidential site in the Novgorod region, reportedly near President Vladimir Putin’s Valdai residence. Russian authorities state that air defense systems intercepted the drones, preventing any harm. Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov condemned the alleged incident as ‘state terrorism’ and a serious escalation that necessitates a review of Russia’s participation in peace negotiations.

Moscow has indicated that it has identified targets for a retaliatory response, asserting that the alleged attack will not be left unaddressed. Lavrov pointed to the timing of the incident, which coincided with diplomatic talks, as particularly problematic. The Valdai compound, a secure presidential retreat in northwestern Russia, was the alleged target.

President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine has strongly refuted Russia’s narrative, labeling it a ‘complete fabrication.’ He accused Moscow of manufacturing the claim to undermine diplomatic momentum, especially after his recent high-level meeting with US President Donald Trump. This meeting reportedly established a new peace plan, including substantial security assurances from the US for Ukraine.

Zelensky publicly stated on X that Russia’s pronouncements are designed to jeopardize the collaborative diplomatic work aimed at achieving peace. Russia, while reviewing its strategic position, has stated its intention to keep diplomatic channels open. Lavrov emphasized that the alleged drone attack is considered a major escalation requiring a concrete response.

The alleged drone incident was reportedly discussed directly between President Putin and President Trump in a phone call. Russian state media reported that Putin briefed Trump on Russia’s reassessment of its peace posture following the alleged strike. While the White House described the presidential call as ‘positive,’ specific details remain undisclosed. Simultaneously, fighting continues on the ground, with intensified operations ordered in the Zaporizhzhia region. The conflicting narratives surrounding the drone incident have added significant instability to the precarious peace process.
