Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has branded Russian President Vladimir Putin a “man of war” following a substantial Russian aerial offensive targeting Kyiv and adjacent territories. The strikes have tragically resulted in civilian fatalities and injuries, underscoring the ongoing severity of the conflict.
During a press conference in Halifax, Canada, with Prime Minister Mark Carney, Zelenskyy contrasted Ukraine’s yearning for peace with Putin’s alleged commitment to warfare. “We want peace,” Zelenskyy declared, “And he’s a man of war.”
This statement precedes Zelenskyy’s significant diplomatic engagement with U.S. President Donald Trump in Florida. The Ukrainian leader is set to propose a comprehensive 20-point peace plan aimed at ending the protracted conflict, with Trump having previously stated his intention to review and approve any such proposal.
Zelenskyy’s Canadian visit also involved important discussions with Prime Minister Carney and key figures from NATO and the EU. He emphasized the necessity of a robust stance, both militarily and diplomatically, to prevent President Putin from undermining a peaceful and equitable resolution. On X, Zelenskyy posted, “Strong positions are needed both at the front and in diplomacy to prevent Putin from manipulating and evading a real and just end to the war. The world has sufficient strength to guarantee security and peace.”
The recent Russian attack involved an extensive array of unmanned aerial vehicles and missiles, with Zelenskyy estimating over 500 drones and 40 missiles directed at Ukraine. Kyiv, especially its energy infrastructure and civilian areas, bore the brunt of the prolonged assault, which lasted for over ten hours. The attacks caused widespread power outages and damaged residential buildings. Rescue operations are underway to locate individuals trapped, and repair efforts for essential services will commence once the all-clear is given.
