Following India’s seven-wicket loss to Australia in the Perth ODI, R Ashwin has raised significant questions about the team’s selection policy, particularly the exclusion of Kuldeep Yadav. The match, reduced to 26 overs per side due to rain, saw India struggle to 136/9. Ashwin expressed his disbelief at the team management’s decision to field three pace bowlers and three all-rounders, including two spinners and a debutant all-rounder, while leaving out a proven wicket-taker like Kuldeep. “Please give a little importance to the bowling as well,” Ashwin urged, emphasizing that on large Australian grounds, Kuldeep’s aggressive spin bowling and bounce generation are vital components of the attack. He questioned the rationale behind prioritizing batting depth to such an extent, suggesting that it might be a way to shield the top-order batters. “How many all-rounders do you want? You already have three,” Ashwin stated, advocating for the inclusion of the team’s best bowlers regardless of batting capabilities. The unusual batting position of Harshit Rana at number 9 further highlighted the perceived imbalance in the team’s strategy. As India looks to bounce back in the Adelaide ODI, these selection concerns will undoubtedly be a focal point.
