Emma Raducanu navigated a stern test from Elina Savinykh to claim a 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 victory in the Australian Open’s opening round. The British star’s win sets the stage for a promising tournament run, highlighting her ability to overcome adversity on the big stage.

Savinykh, punching above her weight after qualifying, pushed Raducanu to the brink. The first set went Raducanu’s way thanks to a late break, but the Kazakh’s heavy topspin and court coverage leveled proceedings in set two, where she capitalized on Raducanu’s unforced errors.

The turning point arrived in the third set. Raducanu dialed in her first serve percentage and attacked Savinykh’s backhand relentlessly. Two breaks later, she was through, pumping her fist in celebration amid cheers from the Rod Laver Arena crowd.

Post-match, Raducanu credited her team: ‘We’ve been working hard on my mental game, and it paid off today.’ After a season plagued by physical issues, this result boosts her confidence ahead of facing Wang Xiyu.

As the Australian Open heats up, Raducanu’s blend of youth, talent, and experience positions her well. Could this be the tournament where she recaptures her US Open magic? Only time will tell, but the signs are encouraging.
