Bollywood star Ranveer Singh is facing legal repercussions after recreating a sacred ritual performance from the film ‘Kantara’ at a public event. While speaking at the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa on November 28th, Singh imitated Rishab Shetty’s depiction of Chavundi Daiva from the film’s climactic scenes. This act has ignited a firestorm of controversy, leading to a formal complaint filed by Bengaluru-based advocate Prashanth Metal. The complaint labels Singh’s actions as illegal and offensive, asserting that they have deeply wounded the feelings of the Tulu-speaking community and many Hindus across the country. The High Grounds Police Station has registered the complaint, invoking sections of the Bharat Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023. The advocate also reported that Singh made disrespectful remarks concerning Ullalthi Daiva during his IFFI address. Singh had previously issued a public apology following an outcry, stating his intention was purely to appreciate Rishab Shetty’s incredible performance and to express actor-to-actor admiration. He also emphasized his deep respect for India’s diverse cultures and beliefs, offering a sincere apology if any sentiments were inadvertently hurt. ‘Kantara’ has been instrumental in bringing wider attention to Daiva worship, a traditional spiritual practice prevalent in Karnataka’s coastal Tulunadu region. Known as ‘Dhaivaradhane’, this custom is of immense cultural and religious significance, involving the invocation of deities through rituals and expressive dances that connect the earthly and divine realms. The film portrays Daiva with reverence, illustrating the intense spiritual energy and emotional connection experienced by those who practice and believe in it.
