The Institute of Kidney Diseases and Research Centre (IKDRC) at Ahmedabad Civil Hospital has redefined excellence in public healthcare by performing 502 kidney transplants in 2025, claiming the national record for any government hospital. This milestone reflects years of dedication to cutting-edge renal care.
Detailed stats reveal the diversity: 157 cadaveric, 90 swap, 49 pediatric, and 43 robotic procedures. Interstate patients numbered 170, drawing from across India to benefit from IKDRC’s unmatched facilities.
Director Dr. Pranjal Modi, also Vice Chancellor of Gujarat Transplantation University, provided insights: ‘502 kidneys and 86 livers transplanted this year, predominantly via PMJAY. We treated 332 locals and 170 out-of-staters identically.’ Emphasizing tech adoption, he noted the surge in robotic surgeries, now gratis thanks to Gujarat’s policy. ‘Post-CM Patel’s February inauguration, we’ve hit 43; 150 projected this year.’
Prioritizing the needy, 318 transplants were PMJAY-funded, making life-saving care accessible. Patient kin Rajabhau Gogri beamed, ‘Zero costs— all borne by the state.’ Abhishek Kushwaha from Sabarkantha added, ‘Government’s inclusive efforts deserve PM and CM’s applause.’
With 86 liver transplants too, IKDRC stands tall in multi-organ expertise. Under CM Bhupendra Patel’s vision, it pioneers advanced tech while upholding affordability, setting a gold standard for India’s medical landscape and proving public institutions can rival the best.
