India has stunned the cricketing world by achieving the highest-ever run chase in a Women’s ODI World Cup semi-final, defeating reigning champions Australia by five wickets in Navi Mumbai to book their place in the 2025 final. Australia’s imposing total of 338 was chased down in 48.3 overs, a testament to India’s incredible batting prowess.

The hero of the day was undoubtedly Jemimah Rodrigues, who played a masterful unbeaten innings of 127 runs off 134 balls. Taking guard at number three, she displayed remarkable poise and skill, guiding India’s chase with unwavering focus. Her substantial 167-run partnership with captain Harmanpreet Kaur, who contributed a crucial 89, was the cornerstone of India’s historic victory, completely overturning the game’s complexion.

In the post-match conference, Rodrigues, the Player of the Match, spoke candidly about her emotions and a surprising revelation about her batting order. “I want to thank Jesus, could not do this on my own,” she said, crediting divine intervention and her support network. “It was really hard this last month, it feels like a dream.” She then revealed, “Did not know I was batting at three. Was taking a shower, just told them to let me know. Five minutes before entering in, I was told I was batting at three.” This unexpected opportunity was seized with both hands.

Rodrigues’ motivation was clear: to win for India. “Today was not about my fifty or my hundred, about making India win.” She also bravely discussed her personal struggles with mental health and anxiety during the tour, finding strength in her faith. “I have almost cried every day through this tour. Not doing well mentally, going through anxiety. I knew I had to show up, and God took care of everything.” She adopted a mantra of faith to navigate the pressure.

The Indian innings, despite losing early wickets, was rebuilt brilliantly by Rodrigues and Kaur. Australia’s inability to capitalize on chances, including dropped catches, proved costly. Contributions from Sharma, Ghosh, and Amanjot Kaur in the latter stages ensured a nervy but successful finish, with Amanjot hitting the winning runs. India will now face South Africa in the final, aiming to secure their maiden World Cup title. Rodrigues’ century in such a high-stakes chase is a record-breaking achievement.
