The security at Delhi’s Red Fort has been compromised, leading to the suspension of seven police personnel, days before the Independence Day celebrations on August 15th. These officers, including constables and head constables, were involved in the security detail. Delhi Police regularly conduct exercises to ensure the safety and security of the area, especially during the lead-up to the Independence Day.

On Saturday, a Special Cell team conducted a drill where they entered the Red Fort complex with a simulated bomb, while dressed in plain clothes. The officers on duty failed to identify the dummy device, leading to their suspension.

The ability of the Special Cell team to enter the Red Fort with a dummy bomb indicates significant weaknesses in the current security setup. Recognizing the seriousness of this breach, the Deputy Commissioner immediately took action and suspended the seven police officers responsible.

Deputy Commissioner Raja Banthia stated that the mock drill was intended to test the security measures ahead of the August 15th celebrations. However, the ease of access that the team experienced has raised questions about the effectiveness of the security protocols. This is particularly concerning, as the Prime Minister addresses the nation from the Red Fort annually, in the presence of numerous dignitaries and citizens.

The incident has created a sense of urgency within the police and security agencies. The Deputy Commissioner has directed the relevant authorities to immediately assess the current security arrangements and develop a new strategy. Additionally, they have been ordered to reinforce the security perimeter, ensure proper personnel deployment, and utilize cutting-edge technological resources.

The Red Fort is known to be a potential target for terrorist attacks. During significant national events like Independence Day, the entire city is placed on high alert to prevent any security breaches. The Delhi Police are also investigating five Bangladeshi nationals who attempted to forcibly enter the Red Fort complex. These individuals are illegal immigrants, aged approximately 20-25, and are employed in Delhi. The police have recovered Bangladeshi documents from them. They are currently being interrogated.
