Reservation Policy Shake-up Imminent in Jammu & Kashmir

A substantial shift in Jammu and Kashmir’s reservation policy is expected following a crucial cabinet meeting tomorrow, December 3rd. The agenda includes finalizing a new framework for government jobs and educational admissions, aimed at appeasing widespread public discontent. General-category aspirants have been vocal in their opposition to the current policy, which grants extensive reservations, often encompassing 60-70% of available slots. This leaves a disproportionately small share for the open-merit category, despite it comprising a significant portion of the population. In response to these concerns and to fulfill an election promise, the government has been working on a revised policy. Recommendations from a cabinet sub-committee suggest increasing the open-merit quota, potentially from 30% to around 40%. This adjustment is envisioned by reducing quotas from specific categories, notably RBA and EWS, while ensuring that SC, ST, and OBC reservations remain intact. The government is also considering the implications of ongoing legal proceedings in the Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh High Court concerning the current reservation system. Any cabinet resolutions will then proceed for Lieutenant Governor’s approval.
