    The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has reported that Rs 2,000 notes valued at Rs 5,884 crore are still circulating, according to the latest data released on October 1. The RBI withdrew the Rs 2,000 notes from circulation on May 19, 2023, but they remain legal tender. The RBI’s data shows a substantial reduction in the total value of these notes, which was Rs 3.56 lakh crore on May 19, 2023, and has now fallen to Rs 5,884 crore as of September 30, 2025. The RBI indicated that approximately 98.35 percent of the Rs 2000 banknotes in circulation on May 19, 2023, have been returned since the withdrawal.
