A substantial missile procurement deal worth Rs 10,000 crore between India and Russia is reportedly under discussion to enhance the ‘Sudarshan’ S-400 air defence missile systems. This move signifies India’s dedication to bolstering its aerial surveillance and interception capabilities. Under the initial 2018 agreement, India was slated to receive five squadrons of the advanced S-400 Triumf system. Three of these squadrons have already been successfully integrated and are operational, forming a vital part of the nation’s defence infrastructure. India is now keen on acquiring the remaining two squadrons to complete its strategic air defence deployment. The early deliveries of the S-400 systems met their schedule, but subsequent deliveries encountered unforeseen complications. The S-400 system, designated ‘Sudarshan Chakra’ in India, is a formidable Russian-developed air defence asset. It stands as a leading long-range surface-to-air missile system, capable of detecting and engaging threats from impressive distances. Its advanced radar and missile technology allow it to counter various aerial threats, including advanced aircraft and missiles, from ranges up to 400 km. The Indian Air Force has identified the S-400 as a pivotal technology that significantly elevates its air defence capabilities and strategic posture.
