In an effort to ensure public safety, authorities in Jashpur, Chhattisgarh, have closed a significant 10km forest road due to elephant movement. The Satpuria forest route between Pategbahal and Jamtoli Chowk is currently restricted after two youths narrowly escaped a charging herd. While one victim sought refuge in a tree, the other managed to run back to their village. A forest rescue unit successfully assisted the stranded man. This incident highlights the ongoing challenges posed by a herd of 37 elephants currently in the area. The forest department’s four-point strategy includes these temporary roadblocks, which are lifted once the animals move on. This method has proven effective in maintaining safety and reducing conflict cases this year.
