A significant moment during the second Test against West Indies saw batting coach Sitanshu Kotak provide focused guidance to Sai Sudharsan after the young batsman was dismissed for 87. Sudharsan, who has been under the microscope for his Test performances, played a gritty innings that laid a strong foundation for India on Day 1.

His knock of 87 runs from 165 balls, featuring 12 boundaries, was a marked improvement from his earlier Test matches. Sudharsan reached his half-century with a steady strike rate, building a valuable partnership with the explosive Yashasvi Jaiswal, who finished the day unbeaten on 173. The duo ensured India ended Day 1 in a dominant position at 318/2.

Sudharsan’s dismissal came via an LBW decision off spinner Jomel Warrican. The delivery was sharp, and a review confirmed it would have gone on to hit the stumps. Post-dismissal, Kotak was observed engaging Sudharsan in an animated discussion on the balcony, seemingly pinpointing the specific technical error that led to his downfall.

Speaking after the day’s play, Sudharsan described his mindset as being focused on expression and making the most of the opportunity rather than chasing personal landmarks. He expressed satisfaction with his contribution but reiterated his aspiration to score even more runs in the future. He also spoke highly of Jaiswal’s ability to convert opportunities into boundaries.

The backing of Sudharsan for the crucial number three position has been consistent, as highlighted by batting mentor Ryan ten Doeschate. He acknowledged the intense competition within the squad but stressed the team’s belief in Sudharsan’s capabilities. Kotak’s detailed coaching session demonstrates the ongoing commitment to help Sudharsan refine his game and secure his long-term place in the Indian batting lineup.
