Salman Khan’s appearance at the Joy Forum 2025 in Riyadh has ignited a significant controversy in Pakistan, turning the festive season of Diwali into a period of intense online debate. A remark by the Bollywood star about Balochistan has been met with polarized reactions, celebrating the division within Pakistan.

While discussing the success of Indian cinema in Saudi Arabia, Khan mentioned the diverse audience, including “People from Balochistan, people from Afghanistan, people from Pakistan all work here.” This statement, intended perhaps as a simple observation of demographics, has been widely interpreted by Baloch nationalists as a powerful affirmation of their distinct identity. For many in Balochistan, this is seen as an acknowledgment of their separate nationhood.

The Balochistan conflict is a highly contentious issue for Pakistan, characterized by an ongoing struggle for independence. Following Khan’s statement, a wave of support has emerged from Baloch citizens globally, who have taken to social media to express their gratitude and hope for self-determination. They perceive Khan’s comment as a form of validation, suggesting that even international figures are beginning to recognize their distinct identity.

However, the reaction from mainstream Pakistan has been predominantly negative, with many condemning Khan for his perceived ignorance of the complex situation in Balochistan. This has led to a clear split on social media platforms, mirroring the real-world tensions surrounding the region. Balochistan, Pakistan’s largest province, is strategically important and resource-rich, but its population has long alleged exploitation and repression by the Pakistani government and military. The recent increase in armed conflict and attacks on security forces underscores the severity of the underlying issues, making Khan’s comment a flashpoint for these simmering resentments.
