The SCO Summit is currently taking place in Tianjin, China, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in attendance. This summit, the 25th of its kind, involves approximately 20 world leaders, including Russian President Vladimir Putin. The choice of Tianjin as the host city demands consideration. Tianjin, China’s third-largest urban area, is a significant port city with a rich history. From being a collection of foreign-controlled enclaves to its present-day status as a major trade and tech hub, the city has undergone considerable transformation. It boasts one of the world’s largest ports and hosts leading-edge technology and major international corporations. In 2015, Tianjin experienced a devastating industrial accident. The summit’s location has strategic implications for China. A key component of the summit is the meeting between PM Modi and Xi Jinping, focusing on India-China relations, especially in light of recent tensions and standoffs. They plan to address the US’s tariffs, resolve border disputes, and work towards resuming direct flights and simplifying visa procedures. PM Modi is expected to discuss a range of issues with Russian President Vladimir Putin, including the impact of Trump’s tariffs, the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, and the situation in Gaza. The attendees include PM Modi, President Putin, and other prominent figures such as the Iranian, Turkish, Egyptian, and Pakistani leaders. Additionally, representatives from Southeast Asia, along with leaders from countries like Cuba and the Democratic Republic of Congo, are expected to attend. This reflects China’s strategy to reinforce its ties in the region. The summit is seen as an opportunity for Tianjin to become a key hub for the Belt and Road Initiative, and further China’s relationships with Central Asia and Eurasia.
