In a significant achievement for South African cricket, Senuran Muthusamy scored his first-ever Test century against India on Sunday at the Barsapara Stadium in Guwahati. The 31-year-old all-rounder, fresh off his ICC Player of the Month award, achieved the milestone with a well-compiled 109 runs from 206 deliveries. Muthusamy received excellent support from wicketkeeper-batter Kyle Verreynne and the imposing Marco Jansen, who helped build crucial partnerships. Reflecting on his achievement in front of a large, enthusiastic crowd, Muthusamy stated it was a ‘really special moment.’ He expressed his satisfaction at being able to contribute substantially to the team’s first-innings score, a critical factor in Test matches. Muthusamy, a Durban native with ancestral links to Tamil Nadu, India, is a product of South Africa’s democratic era. His cricket career, which started in school and continued through domestic cricket with KwaZulu-Natal and the Dolphins, saw him also pursue a degree in media and marketing. He made his Test debut in 2019 against India, famously dismissing captain Virat Kohli. Overcoming earlier advers under challenging circumstances in India, Muthusamy has made a strong comeback, proving his value with his economical left-arm spin and dependable batting in the lower order, making him a key player for the Proteas.
