A significant setback has befallen the Indian cricket team as star batsman Shreyas Iyer has been ruled out for a minimum of three weeks following a rib injury. The injury occurred during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney on October 25, when Iyer took a spectacular catch to dismiss Alex Carey. While executing the catch, he landed awkwardly, leading to an impact on his left rib cage.

Following the incident, Iyer was taken for scans. Medical reports indicate that he will be out of action for at least three weeks. The exact nature of the injury is still being assessed, and if it involves a minor fracture, the recovery period could be longer. He is slated to report to the Centre of Excellence for his rehabilitation process.

The injury casts uncertainty on Iyer’s participation in the upcoming ODI series against South Africa, which begins on November 30. The projected three-week recovery period means his availability for the first ODI in Ranchi is questionable, with officials noting it could be a tight race against time. His recovery will be closely monitored.

The catch that led to the injury was a testament to Iyer’s fielding prowess. He sprinted from backward point to take a skier off Harshit Rana’s bowling. However, the subsequent landing on the ground resulted in a painful impact to his ribs. He received immediate attention from the team’s medical staff before being transported for further assessment.

Despite the loss of Iyer, India celebrated a convincing nine-wicket victory over Australia in the Sydney ODI. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli led the charge in chasing down the target of 237 runs, ensuring a comfortable win. The team management will now focus on Iyer’s rehabilitation and his eventual return to the squad.
