The Indian team, under the captaincy of Shubman Gill, is preparing for a five-match Test series against England, starting June 20 at Headingley. This series presents a challenging scenario for the Indian team, as they will play without the experience of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. During a press conference, Shubman Gill provided insights into his approach for the series.
“The key to winning a Test match lies in taking 20 wickets; it doesn’t matter how many runs you score. We’ve focused on this aspect, strategizing how to secure 20 wickets. We might opt for a combination featuring specialist batsmen, potentially with a bowling all-rounder and a strong pace attack of three or four bowlers,” Gill mentioned.
“When I go out to bat, I want to approach it as a batsman, not burdened by the captaincy role, which can add unnecessary pressure,” Gill said. “My aim is to focus on dominating the opposition and becoming the top batsman in the series.”
“When I play, I always feel challenged by the opposition; all the key players would experience this. I don’t expect anything different in this series,” Gill stated.
Gill emphasized the significance of the Test series, stating, “As captain, you might only get a few opportunities to play in England – perhaps two or three times if you are the best. The IPL happens every year. So, winning a Test series in England, Australia, New Zealand, or South Africa is, in my opinion, a bigger achievement.”
