Tragedy struck Pretoria early Saturday when a shooting at the Saulsville Hostel in Atteridgeville left 11 people dead and 14 injured. The South African Police Service (SAPS) confirmed the casualties, noting that the victims included three children aged 3, 12, and 16, alongside adult victims. The assailants, described as three unknown gunmen, allegedly opened fire indiscriminately inside an illegal shebeen where patrons were gathered. The incident occurred at approximately 4:15 am, with police responding later. Authorities have mobilized significant resources, including forensic investigators, and launched a manhunt for the suspects. This violent event highlights the persistent challenge of illegal liquor establishments in South Africa, with SAPS reporting numerous shutdowns and arrests related to illicit alcohol sales. The Pretoria shooting echoes recent outbreaks of gun violence, such as the mass shooting in Cape Town last month, raising alarms about public safety and the escalating crime rates in the country.
