Shubman Gill, the current Indian Test captain, has been sidelined for the second Test against South Africa, which is slated to begin on November 22 in Guwahati. Rishabh Pant, who serves as the vice-captain, will now lead the Indian contingent in this critical Freedom Trophy 2025 encounter. Gill sustained a neck injury during the first innings of the preceding Test in Kolkata. He was forced to retire hurt after facing only three balls and was promptly taken to a hospital for immediate medical attention. His inability to return to the crease meant he was unavailable for the remainder of the Kolkata Test.

Indications are that Gill’s injury might also impact his availability for the subsequent ODI series. Team management is reportedly exercising caution, aiming to prevent any recurrence or worsening of the injury, particularly with a packed international schedule on the horizon. A decision to rest him from the ODIs would be a proactive measure to ensure his complete recovery for future commitments. If Gill remains absent for the Guwahati Test, Rishabh Pant will continue to captain the side as India looks to recover from their 30-run defeat in the first Test, where they were bundled out for 93 in their chase of 124.

The injury occurred after Gill appeared to experience a whiplash effect while playing a shot. He was taken to the hospital for evaluation and remained under medical supervision. Although initial updates suggested a positive prognosis, Gill was later seen at the Kolkata airport wearing a neck brace, signaling a restricted range of motion. The BCCI has stated that Gill will accompany the team to Guwahati, and a final decision on his participation will be made closer to the match date. The inclusion of all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy in the squad offers a potential replacement option, especially if Gill is unable to play.
