Sunday’s New Delhi Marathon is set to shatter records with over 30,000 participants flooding the streets, flagged off by national heroes Vijender Singh and Rohan Bopanna at JLN Stadium. This massive gathering underscores India’s rising prominence in global athletics.
With runners from 31 countries, 490 cities, and all 32 Indian states/UTs, the event transcends borders. Four race formats—42K full marathon, 21K half, 10K, and 5K—cater to everyone from pros to novices. India’s elite squad shines with names like Anish Thapa, Man Singh, Gopi T, Beliyappa, Dr. Kartik, Akshay Saini, Bhagirathi Bisht, Nirmaben Thakor, Ashwini Jadhav, Disket Dolma, and Stanjzin Dolkar.
Serving as a key qualifier for Asian Games, it ramps up the intensity. Adding depth, 20 blind athletes participate, proving barriers are meant to be broken. The event has garnered Rs 10 lakh for the Athletics Federation of India, earmarked for junior talent nurturing.
Race Director Nagraj Adiga of NEB Sports shared, ‘This marathon celebrates the human spirit and unity. Global participation and our inclusive ethos make us immensely proud. We’re building a launchpad for athletes’ dreams.’ As Delhi runs, the world watches a story of perseverance unfold.
