The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) congratulated weightlifter Mirabai Chanu on successful India’s first gold medal on the second day of the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
Mirabai, who received silver on the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, defended her Commonwealth gold from the 2018 version with a record-breaking whole of 201kg (88kg + 113kg) within the 49kg class of ladies’s weightlifting on the National Exhibition Centre on Saturday.
“To be one of the strongest medal prospects and live up to the expectations is not easy, but Mirabai Chanu has done that with excellence and we are very happy to see her and her support system’s efforts come to fruition today,” IOA Acting President Anil Khanna stated in an announcement.

“Better yet, she challenged herself to attempt the 90kg lift. Though the result wasn’t the desired one, Chanu’s commitment to pushing the envelope and setting the bar higher as one of India’s best athletes is commended by the IOA. We congratulate her and the other medallists, Sanket Sargar, Gururaja Poojary, and Bindyarani Devi for performing with excellence in their respective categories,” added Khanna.
India received a complete of 4 medals, together with Mirabai’s gold, on the second day. Fellow weightlifters Sanket Sargar (silver in males’s 55kg), Gururaja Poojary (bronze in males’s 61kg) and Bindyarani Devi (silver in ladies’s 55kg) accomplished India’s medal tally on Day 2.
The third day is anticipated to see India including extra medals to its tally as extra weightlifters, together with the likes of Jeremy Lalrinnunga (males’s 67kg class) and Popy Hazarika (ladies’s 59kg class), shall be in motion.
