Dawid Malan on England’s ‘strange’ contract system – It appears closely led in the direction of red-ball cricket

By India Today Web Desk: Left-handed batter Dawid Malan was a tad shocked after he did not discover a place in England’s central contract that was introduced on Wednesday. Earlier, the 35-year-old southpaw acquired a spot within the contract for the interval from October 2021 to September 2022.

However, after he misplaced his place within the Test staff following England’s 0-4 within the Ashes, Malan couldn’t hold his place within the central contract both. He is at present in an incremental contract with the ECB.

Nevertheless, Malan retains being an integral a part of England’s white-ball groups, particularly T20Is. The veteran urged the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) to present white-ball cricket recognition just like Test cricket.

“There’s obviously a slightly strange system with the contracting system. It seems heavily led towards red-ball cricket when you have players that play one or two formats of the white-ball game. They are decisions that I don’t make but, ultimately, it puts you in tough situations if you’re not contracted and you’re losing finances playing in tournaments in the winter,” Malan mentioned in a presser.

“Hopefully, white-ball cricket can get recognised as Test cricket does. You have players here who have been leading wicket-takers for England that don’t have a contract, but those are decisions that I don’t make. Keysy and I have had that chat already,” he acknowledged.

“As players, we’d like to be rewarded for our performances for England. You’d guess that’s what contracts are for; and if you’re ranked in the top five in the world for three years, you’d hope you’d get recognised with a white-ball contract, but that’s just how it works. It’s still an honour to play for England, and you want to play and win as many games as you can for England,” Malan added.

Malan, on Wednesday, gained the Player of the Match award after he scored 82 runs off 49 balls with seven fours and 4 sixes in opposition to Australia within the second T20I.

On the again of his knock, England posted 178 for the lack of seven wickets, after which they gained the match by eight runs.
