At BCCI’s Naman Awards in New Delhi, Test and ODI skipper Shubman Gill opened up about his obsession: a World Cup win for India. The 2027 ODI tournament in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia is never far from his mind, especially after the 2023 final heartbreak against Australia.

In the panel discussion, Gill was forthright: ‘It sneaks into my thoughts now and then. We were tantalizingly close in India. This is a golden chance. For the country, any format’s World Cup victory is the holy grail.’

His personal arc adds depth—from watching the 2013 Champions Trophy as a kid, idolizing Kohli, Sharma, Ashwin, and Dhoni, to lifting it in 2025. ‘That final against England was pure magic on screen,’ Gill reminisced. ‘Childhood dreams revolve around such ICC moments. Achieving one after over a decade was monumental for us all.’

On leading the side, Gill downplayed the weight. ‘Focus on your strengths,’ he advised. ‘Mine is opening the batting and piling runs. Do that, and leadership flows naturally. Winning matches is the endgame—how can I drive that?’

Gill’s vision positions India strongly for 2027. With his bat and brains, silverware seems within reach.
