India’s weightlifting star Gyaneshwari Yadav stole the spotlight on the third day of the Asian Weightlifting Championship 2026, grabbing silver in snatch and bronze in overall total in the women’s 53kg class. Her lifts—88kg snatch and 194kg combined—marked a triumphant moment at Gandhinagar’s Mahatma Mandir.

Kicking off May 11, the championship unites 178 lifters from 30 nations, serving as a crucial gateway to the 2026 Commonwealth Games. The qualification stakes have turned every barbell into a battleground.

Golden glory went to China’s Jinlan Zhao with 216kg (95kg snatch, 121kg clean & jerk). Silver overall to Vietnam’s Hoi Huong Nguyen at 195kg, leaving Yadav with bronze by a mere 1kg difference. Nguyen’s 108kg clean & jerk secured her spot.

Yadav’s snatch mastery, trailing only Zhao, highlighted her precision under pressure. Though clean & jerk proved tougher, her total resilience earned podium finish.

‘It’s a clear sign of our athletes’ grit and India’s ascent in Asia,’ said IWF CEO Ashwani Kumar. The razor-close results signal narrowing gaps with top rivals.

Congratulating the squad, officials see Yadav’s medals as a launchpad. With categories still unfolding, expectations soar for an Indian medal rush in the days ahead.
