Basketball enthusiasts in India have reason to celebrate: FIBA Asia has awarded the 2026 U18 Asia Cup hosting rights to Ahmedabad for August 13-23. This is the third occasion for India, building on its rich legacy of staging this key Asian youth competition.

The vibrant city, boasting the planet’s biggest cricket ground, will host 16 powerhouse U18 squads from Asia and Oceania. With 2030 Commonwealth Games on the horizon and a 2036 Olympic bid underway, Ahmedabad is evolving into a premier multi-sport arena.

Historical highlights include Kolkata 1998, where Yao Ming’s debut propelled China to victory, adding to their seven-title haul. Bengaluru 2004 was Iran’s breakthrough, sweeping all games and toppling Korea for their first Asian championship, marking a new era.

Australia, fresh off their 2024 Jordan win, leads the pack with New Zealand and others qualified via regionals. Kazakhstan set the pace by conquering the Central Asia U18 Championship.

Upcoming qualifiers: South Asia in Colombo May 25-29, East Asia Fukuoka June 2-7, Southeast Asia Krabi June 10-14, Gulf Doha dates TBD.

Tournament structure: 16 teams in four groups. Per-group top-3 to playoffs; group toppers skip to QFs. Top four qualify for FIBA U19 Worlds 2027 in Pardubice, Czechia (June 26-July 4).

This hosting gig not only spotlights emerging talents but also boosts India’s infrastructure and fanbase for basketball’s future growth.
