The Italian Open 2026 semifinals delivered high drama as Elina Svitolina dismantled Iga Swiatek’s title defense with a commanding 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 victory. The Ukrainian star secures her spot in the final for the third time, returning to the big stage after her 2017-18 double triumph.

Svitolina will now battle Coco Gauff for the crown, with both vying for their season’s first WTA 1000 honor. Holding a 3-2 head-to-head edge, including two wins over Gauff this year, Svitolina enters as the psychological frontrunner.

In a 2-hour-14-minute marathon, Svitolina’s clutch play shone through, saving 11/16 break points—including a perfect 5/5 in the third set. Her season-leading 44/59 break point saves underscore her return to elite form.

‘I feel great being in the final again after so long,’ Svitolina beamed. ‘This tournament run has been outstanding.’

Adding to the narrative, the finalists’ age disparity of 9 years and 182 days rivals historical matchups, topping all since 1990’s 17-year gap between Navratilova and Seles. Gauff joins elite company as the youngest American for back-to-back finals since Venus and the first post-Swiatek for consecutive Rome appearances.
