With the Women’s ODI World Cup 2025 approaching, set to be held in India and Sri Lanka from September 30th, New Zealand has taken proactive steps to prepare. They’ve arrived in India to begin preparations a month and a half before the tournament, setting up a training camp at the Chennai Super Kings Academy.
The team chose the Chennai Super Kings Academy for a two-week camp, recognizing the advantages the pitch offers to spinners. After the camp, the team will return home before traveling to Dubai for an ODI series against England, where similar conditions are expected.
Head Coach Ben Sawyer highlighted the reasons behind the early arrival, emphasizing the absence of cricket during New Zealand’s winter. The team has brought seven contracted players and three additional players to maximize cricket exposure. The experience has been rewarding thus far.
Participating players include Jess Kerr, Georgia Plimmer, Brooke Halliday, Izzy Sharp, Flora Devonshire, and Emma McLeod. Izzy Sharp, Flora Devonshire, and Emma McLeod have been added as emerging players.
Indian spinner Asha Shobhana is also involved in the camp, with the New Zealand team benefiting from her expertise. Asha competes in the Women’s Premier League for Royal Challengers Bangalore.
New Zealand’s World Cup journey begins with a match against Australia on October 1st. They will face India on October 23rd at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium, Guwahati. The semi-finals are scheduled for October 29th and 30th, with the final on November 2nd.
