NorthEast United FC claimed victory in the Durand Cup final, defeating Diamond Harbour FC with a score of 6-1 at Salt Lake Stadium, successfully defending their title. The Highlanders led 2-0 at halftime, and their performance continued to improve in the second half, recording the largest winning margin in a Durand Cup final since India’s independence. Asheer Akhtar scored the first goal, followed by Parthib Gogoi who doubled the lead before halftime. Thoi Singh, substitute Jairo Samperio, Andres Rodriguez, and Alaaeddine Ajaraie (penalty) contributed additional goals, securing the historic win. Luka Majcen scored the only goal for Diamond Harbour. Diamond Harbour FC, despite eliminating ISL giants Jamshedpur FC and East Bengal en route to the final, could not keep up the pace in the final match. NorthEast United’s victory was attributed to their impenetrable defense, midfield control, and clinical finishing. NorthEast United is only the second team after East Bengal to win the Durand Cup in consecutive years since India’s independence.
