Bengaluru buzzes with hockey fervor as the Indian women’s national camp unites generations. Chief coach Shourd Marin and scientific advisor Wayne Lombard drive a program laser-focused on skill-building and disciplined tactics. Young midfielder Sakshi Rana, just 18, benefits immensely from senior guidance in this high-intensity setup.
Sakshi’s goal-scoring debut against Spain last year signaled her potential. The camp offers a perfect blend of drills, conditioning, and mentorship. ‘Deficiencies make us grind daily,’ she said. ‘Wayne sir nails our power and fitness requirements, emphasizing recovery. Sessions are clear and progressive. Seniors constantly fire us up to excel.’
Her aggressive, swift playstyle emerged under coach Kuldeep at Sonipat’s Pritam Siwach Academy. Transitioning to seniors, experts are teaching her to pair instinct with strategy. Coaches stress scanning ahead and communicating effectively in midfield.
‘In meetings, they affirmed my approach but pushed for better pre-scans and on-pitch chatter for center role,’ Sakshi detailed. ‘We’re dissecting structure: precise ball control and passes beat feints when pressure mounts internationally.’
Hockey India League exposure against elites like Yibbi Jensen sharpened her edge. ‘Post-HIL, my confidence in talks soared. Seeing internationals dominate center mid taught game savvy,’ she added.
Beyond personal growth, the camp prepares for Hyderabad’s FIH Hockey World Cup 2026 Qualifier (March 8-14). India meets Uruguay on the 8th, Scotland the 9th, and Wales the 11th. Mentorship here could define their qualifier fate.
