By India Today Web Desk: Shreyas Iyer opened up on India’s conservative strategy upfront in white ball cricket, saying one can not play in T20 mode straightaway in fifty overs. Iyer, who scored a 76-ball 80, stated 306 for 7 posted by India was a commendable whole however the guests have been blown away by the unconquered 221-run fourth-wicket partnership between Latham and Williamson.

New Zealand chased down the goal of 306 set by India with 2.5 overs to spare within the first ODI of a three-match sequence at Eden Park in Auckland on Friday.

“We can’t play in the T20 mode straightaway in fifty overs because there is more time. One can plan his batting by looking at the wicket and deciding in his mind what a par score would be. One needs to adapt. Fifty overs can change from time to time. Sometimes there can be sunset, there can be dew at other times and you don’t know how the wicket will play,” Shreyas Iyer instructed reporters after the primary ODI.

The marathon chase was powered by a surprising century from Tom Latham and the skipper Kane Williamson’s undefeated 94. The duo chased the goal with an unbeaten 221-run stand and went 1-0 within the sequence. Shreyas Iyer lauded Kane Williamson and Tom Latham and heaped reward on the best way they tackled the chase.

“They played fantastic knocks. They knew which bowlers to target. The way Latham took off in that over, I think that completely shifted the momentum towards them. He wanted to come in and build that partnership. Since they have been playing together for so many years, I am sure they know their strengths and weaknesses pretty closely. I believe that partnership completely changed the scenario of the game and that was a crucial phase for us to get the wicket. If we had got one wicket, we would have been under the skin and the situation would have been completely different,” Iyer added.
