Jammu and Kashmir’s Sonamarg Tourist Resort transformed into a sporting arena on Saturday with the launch of the 10th National Snowshoe Championship. Featuring 178 athletes from 20 diverse states, the event highlights India’s burgeoning interest in winter disciplines.
Syed Qamar Sajjad, Tourism Director for Kashmir, inaugurated the competition, setting the tone for an exhilarating weekend. The resort’s snow-capped meadows offered an idyllic setting, drawing praise from all quarters.
During the flag-off ceremony, Sajjad articulated the event’s broader impact. National sporting extravaganzas like this invigorate winter tourism, provide platforms for talent nurturing, and fortify community economies. Attendees included representatives from sports organizations, government bodies, coaching staff, and avid followers.
Competitors expressed delight at Sonamarg’s natural splendor and superior snow conditions, positioning it as the ultimate snowshoeing hub. The championship is poised to amplify adventure sports participation throughout the Union Territory.
Bolstering this momentum is the state-of-the-art Sonamarg Tunnel, unveiled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 13, 2025. Spanning 6.5 kilometers, the dual-lane passage connects Gagangeer to Sonamarg, circumventing the perilous, snow-vulnerable G-road.
What once took hours amid avalanches and closures now zips through in 15 minutes, ensuring perpetual access. Winter sports season is thriving, with the tunnel heralding Sonamarg’s evolution into a round-the-year paradise. Expect riveting contests and a surge in tourism as athletes battle for glory.
