The five-time singles Wimbledon champion Venus Williams credited her sister Serena for her comeback to the Championships.
Venus made a successful return to the grasscourt main on July 1. She, together with Jamie Murray, had obtained the wild card for the combined doubles. The pair defeated Alicja Rosolska and Michael Venus 6-3, 6-7 (3), 6-3 of their first-round match on Court No. 1.
“(Entering) it was definitely super last minute. Just inspired by Serena,” Venus was quoted as saying after the match.
Venus added that she had “no plan to play. (But) I saw the grass and I got excited … I haven’t played in a year so you don’t know what you’re going to get.”
When asked about her future, Venus said: “You never know where I’ll pop up”.
Jamie, who also has a famous sibling, Andy Murray, added that Venus’ camp messaged him asking to partner him.
“I think you played great,” Jamie mentioned. “Like, she hasn’t performed for a very long time. First match, huge court docket, lots of people. It’s not straightforward. It was an important expertise (to) play with Venus Williams. When am I going to get the possibility to do this?”
SERENA AND ANDY
Serena made her comeback on June 28 within the singles competitors. The 23-time Grand Slam champion crashed out of the match after shedding her first-round match to France’s Harmony Tan. Meanwhile, Andy was knocked out within the second spherical by John Isner.
Interestingly, Serena and Andy, too, joined forces within the combined doubles on the 2019 Wimbledon and made it to the third spherical.
