The ICC Women’s ODI World Cup 2025 witnessed a thrilling conclusion as Sri Lanka clinched a seven-run victory over Bangladesh in a match that decided the latter’s fate in the tournament. The Dr DY Patil Sports Academy in Navi Mumbai was the venue for this high-pressure encounter.

Set a target of 203, Bangladesh faltered in the crucial final over. Needing eight runs to secure a win and keep their World Cup hopes alive, they were undone by a phenomenal bowling display from Sri Lankan captain Chamari Athapaththu. Athapaththu took three wickets in the space of four balls, restricting Bangladesh to 195/9 and securing a memorable win for her team.

Bangladesh’s batting efforts were commendable, with Nigar Sultana Joty leading the charge with 77 runs and Sharmin Akter providing valuable support with an unbeaten 64. Despite their solid contributions, the team couldn’t handle the pressure in the dying moments of the game.

Athapaththu’s impactful bowling figures of 4/42 were the highlight, making her the standout performer and the match’s leading wicket-taker. Support bowlers Sugandika Kumari (2/29) and Udeshika Prabodhani (1/29) also played vital roles in stifling Bangladesh’s chase.

This victory keeps Sri Lanka firmly in contention for a semi-final berth, while Bangladesh’s tournament journey concludes following their fifth defeat.
