Srinagar’s Scorching Heatwave: School Timings and Summer Breaks Announced

Srinagar is experiencing an extreme heatwave, with the temperature reaching record levels. On Friday, the temperature hit 35.5 degrees Celsius, the highest recorded so far this season. This follows the previous day’s reading of 35.2 degrees, signifying a continuation of the intense heat. The current temperatures are the highest in June since 2005 and the warmest since 1988, highlighting the severity of the situation. In response, the government has announced changes to school schedules in an effort to protect students from the heat. The Education Minister has declared that schools within Srinagar city will operate from 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM, starting June 21. Schools outside the municipal limits will have revised hours, operating from 8:30 AM to 1:30 PM. A summer break has also been scheduled for all schools in the Kashmir division, starting July 1 and lasting for ten days. The government will review the weather conditions after July 10 and decide on a possible extension. The local meteorological department anticipates rain and thunderstorms, offering a possible end to the heatwave.
