At 45,417, Kerala has lowest variety of households in slums

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala has the bottom variety of households in slums amongst city inhabitants in comparison with many different states. While the state has 45,417 households residing in slums, Gujarat has 3.45 lakh households, Uttar Pradesh 10.66 lakh, Maharashtra 24.99 lakh, Madhya Pradesh 11.17 lakh and Karnataka 7.07 lakh.

The knowledge was supplied by Union Minister of State for Housing and Urban Affairs Kaushal Kishore in response to a query raised by CPM MP A A Rahim within the Rajya Sabha.  As per the Centre’s knowledge, which is predicated on the 2011 census, 6.54 crore folks from 1.39 crore households dwell in 1,08,227 slums throughout the nation.

The Union minister, in his reply, additional identified that colonisation is a state topic. Schemes associated to housing for the city poor, together with slum dwellers, are being applied by states and union territories. The Union ministry of housing and concrete affairs helps such efforts by offering Central help.

Going by the information, BJP-ruled states, together with Gujarat, have excessive numbers of slum-dwellers whereas Kerala is among the many states with the bottom variety of households residing in slums, stated Rahim.

“Households in slums in BJP’s model state Gujarat is 3,45,998. Surat alone has 4,67,434 people living in slums. The figures expose the reality behind BJP’s developmental claims. The Kerala figures show that the Left is the real alternative,” stated Rahim.  The CPM chief additional added that the Union authorities can not wash its fingers of the duty of rehabilitating slum dwellers. The Centre should present extra funds to  states to allow development of housing services for slum dwellers, he added.
