Lakshadweep row: UDF MPs stage dharna, demand withdrawal of ‘anti-people’ laws

KOCHI: The Congress-led UDF MPs staged a protest in entrance of the Lakshadweep Administrator’s Office in Kochi demanding withdrawal of the proposed “anti-people laws” by the central authorities in Lakshadweep islands. IUML MP ET Mohammed Basheer inaugurated the dharna. 

Terming the laws handed by the administrator Praful Khoda Patel “undemocratic”, Basheer known as for the withdrawal of laws and govt orders handed after May 12. “These regulations are issued against the interests of the citizens residing in Lakshadweep and curtailing their rights,” he mentioned. 

All MPs from Kerala besides Rahul Gandhi, Okay Muraleedharan, Okay Sudhakaran, Kodikunnil Suresh, Sashi Tharoor, Adoor Prakash, and N Okay Premachandran took half within the protest.

Lakshadweep residents sat on a 12-hour starvation strike on Monday to protest in opposition to the three proposed guidelines governing tourism, cattle and panchayat elections, which they worry will destroy the tradition and custom of the island, house to round 70,000 residents.

“People of Lakshadweep are on a hunger strike as a mark of protest against several decisions of the Praful Khoda Patel-led administration,” mentioned UCK Thangal, convener of ‘Save Lakshadweep Forum’, which known as the 12-hour-long starvation strike.

This is the primary time all islanders are observing such a protest. All outlets besides the medical shops are shut down. People are protesting at their homes with a purpose to observe the lockdown laws.
