NGT asks panel to look into unlawful mining in Kerala’s Ithikkara river

NEW DELHI: Acting on alleged unlawful mining close to the Ithikkara River in Kerala’s Kollam, the National Green Tribunal has directed a joint committee, together with the National Center for Sustainable Coastal Management (NCSCM), Chennai to go to the world and file a report inside two months. The principal bench of Justice Sudhir Agarwal and professional member A Senthil Vel noticed that the criticism wants consideration.

“In our view, the matter requires consideration, and a substantial question of environment relating to implementation of the scheduled enactments in NGT Act, 2010 has arisen but before taking any further action, a factual action report must be obtained by a joint Committee,” the order said.

Apart from NCSCM, Chennai, the committee will even comprise state PCB, the Irrigation division, and Coastal Zone Management Authority. Petitioner Okay Ramachandran Pillai said that the river Ithikkara, which is claimed to be a holy and traditionally essential river having a few of the temples on financial institution of the river.

The grievance is concerning the arbitrary and unlawful mining, which is happening the embankment, buffer space, and flood zone of the river inflicting big disturbance to the ecology pertaining to aquatic life, and many others. and in addition disturbing or damaging mangroves. The violators have even broken two bandhs constructed on the river, the plea added.
