Ostracised tribal man drowns in Idamalayar; his dream unrealised

KOCHI: Ostracised and banished by his neighborhood, Chellappan has been residing within the deep forest, combating wild animals and the vagaries of nature. After twenty years in isolation, he had reached Idamalayar tribal hostel together with a bunch of tribals from Arayakappu settlement hoping to get a chunk of land the place he can quiet down. On Sunday, Chellappan drowned within the Idamalayar reservoir — leaving his dream unfulfilled. 

According to the forest division, Chellappan, who resided in a makeshift tent on the banks of Idamalayar reservoir, used to fish within the reservoir and promote his catch at Vadattupara marketplace for a residing. On Saturday night, he visited the market and returned to his tent on a bamboo raft.

His physique was fished out of the Ochamthuruthu space the very subsequent day. His spouse Yasodha had been working as a housemaid in Kothamangalam for the previous six months with youngsters Aji and Athul staying at Vettilappara tribal hostel. Aji is a Class 10 pupil and Athul is in Class VII.

In June 2021, the household moved to the Idamalayar tribal hostel together with 11 tribal households of the Arayakappu settlement, who deserted their land as a result of worry of untamed animals and demanded allotment of land with a motorable street. However, Chellappan’s pleas have been turned down because the household didn’t have a ration card.
