THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Following the state authorities’s resolution to launch an in depth investigation into allegations of economic irregularities inside the K9 squad (canine squad), additional disturbing revelations have come to mild.

It seems that sure people inside the high police ranks intentionally hindered a proposal to determine a fully-functional breeding facility for police canines within the state, prone to facilitate corruption.

According to data obtained by TNIE, in 2021, a retired BSF canine coach generously gifted two feminine Belgian Malinois puppies for the aim of breeding. Subsequently, the then state police chief, Anil Kant, issued orders to coach these puppies as demo canines and home them on the Thrissur state canine coaching centre for breeding functions.

The directive aimed to develop the police’s personal self-sufficient breeding facility and cut back reliance on costly canines procured from kennels in different states, the place corrupt practices and the acquisition of inferior pedigree canines have been prevalent considerations.

Unfortunately, the proposal didn’t materialise as meant, as the 2 feminine puppies have been relocated to Idukki and Thrissur City, respectively. Sources reveal that the puppies have been faraway from the coaching centre intentionally to sabotage the institution of a full-fledged breeding facility for police canines.

“If the police were to establish their own breeding facility and rear dogs for their exclusive use, we would no longer need to depend on private kennels. The procurement of dogs from kennels in other states is worrisome due to the corruption involved. Dishonest officials take cuts, resulting in the acquisition of dogs with subpar pedigrees,” stated the sources.

While two cases of profitable breeding occurred within the coaching centre previously, involving Labrador Retrievers, subsequent breeding endeavours didn’t happen.

In 2022, the then Director of the Kerala Police Academy, Balram Kumar Upadhyay, wrote to the State Police Chief requesting intervention to retrieve the 2 canines, however his appeals went unanswered.

These puppies have since matured into grownup canines and at the moment are appropriate for breeding. However, sure officers expressed disinterest in returning them to the academy, citing their present duties.

One of the canines is educated in explosives detection, whereas the opposite is educated in narcotics detection. The official clarification is that they can’t be spared from their respective districts the place they’re at the moment deployed.

However, sources declare that this justification is baseless since there are already an ample variety of canines in these districts able to performing the required duties.

“The two dogs were born from foreign parents, boasting a commendable pedigree. Breeding them would have yielded high-quality puppies. Regrettably, certain individuals are keeping them away from the dog training centre for personal motives, disregarding these significant factors. It is disheartening. Spare dogs are available in the districts, and relocating the two dogs to the centre would not impair the functionality of the dog squad there,” expressed an officer carefully related to the squad.
