ECMO unit of SCB Medical College and Hospital to be prepared by August 15

BHUBANESWAR: Ahead of a potential third of Covid-19 pandemic, the State authorities has determined to make the extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) unit at SCB Medical College and Hospital at Cuttack useful by August 15.

As per a call taken at a high-level assembly, 9 ECMO machines will likely be put in on the Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery division of SCB by August 10. While tender has been finalised for procurement of six machines, three others are being sourced by the CSR route. Sources stated the State has already obtained one machine as a part of the CSR exercise of trade and two are anticipated by July 10. The remaining six beneath procurement will arrive by the top of this month. 

Additional Chief Secretary of Health PK Mohapatra stated the collection of cardiothoracic surgeons, anesthesiologists and skilled technicians, particularly perfusionists and ECG technicians has already been accomplished. “Initially, we have decided to appoint health professionals for the ECMO unit on a contractual basis as regular appointments will take time. Three cardiothoracic surgeons, four anesthesiologists, seven perfusionists and ECG technicians have been selected and will be appointed soon,” he stated.

The Health division has organized hands-on coaching for the professionals at Medica Superspecialty Hospital, Kolkata. Divided into two batches, the employees will endure coaching for 10 days every on the facility. The coaching programme is predicted to be over by July 31.

Though earlier, it was determined to put in an ECMO unit at Capital Hospital right here, the plan was modified because of the lack of enough perfusionists and cardiothoracic surgeons. Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik is slated to inaugurate the ECMO unit at SCB on Independence Day.
