Mahanadi influx to Odisha drops as Chhattisgarh units up 516 barrages

BHUBANESWAR: Inflow of water into the Odisha a part of the Mahanadi has decreased significantly during the last three a long time as Chhattisgarh authorities constructed about 516 barrages within the higher catchment space of the river.

In a written reply to a query from Tara Prasad Bahinipati (Congress) within the Assembly on Thursday, Minister of State for Water Resources Tara Prasad Bahinipati stated that the influx of water to Mahanadi river in the course of the non-monsoon interval has decreased by 4 per cent (laptop) between 1991 and 2005. Thereafter until 2016, water influx decreased by 37 laptop. Following this, influx of water into Hirakud dam has considerably dropped.

After that, there was a drastic discount in water influx due to building of numerous barrages by the Chhattisgarh authorities. While water influx decreased by 65 laptop in 2016-17, it was 61 laptop in 2017-18 and 57 laptop in 2018-19.  

The Minister stated that the State authorities has taken a number of steps to resolve the longstanding water dispute between the 2 neighbouring states. A statutory criticism was filed earlier than the Centre in 2016 beneath the Inter-State River Water Disputes Act-1956. The authentic swimsuit was filed within the Supreme Court. 

As per the Centre’s notification issued on March 12, 2018, Odisha has been putting its demand earlier than Mahanadi Water Disputes Tribunal on completely different events. In the Tribunal, states like Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Jharkhand, Odisha and Chhattisgarh have been made events.
