Nine killed, 11 injured after pickup van overturns in Odisha’s Koraput

JEYPORE: A visit to attend the Dasaha mourning rituals of deceased kin ended tragically for a gaggle of 30 individuals from Chhattisgarh when the pickup van hit a roadside tree and overturned, killing 9 and injuring 11 close to Murtahandi village on Sunday.

Seven individuals had been killed on the spot and two others succumbed at Kotpad group well being centre, South Western Range DIG, Rajesh Pandit mentioned.

Of the 11 injured, 4 had been admitted to Kotpad CHC. Another seven had been rushed to a hospital in Jagdalpur.

The accident came about on the National Highway at about 8.45 pm. The driver of the ill-fated car managed to flee after the incident. “Prima facie, it appears the pickup van overturned just ahead of the railway tracks. There were close to 30 passengers inside the vehicle,” mentioned an officer of the Odisha Fire Service.

Upon intimation, two groups from Kotpad and Borigumma fireplace stations rushed to the spot. The accident website had little or no illumination out there making it tough for rescue and reduction operations. 

Sources mentioned the passengers had come from Nagarnar in Bastar district to attend the dying rituals of one among their kinfolk at Murtahandi in Koraput.
