Rare fowl sighted at Mangalajodi

By Express News Service
BHUBANESWAR: Leucistic Common Moorhen, a uncommon colored fowl, was noticed at Mangalajodi wetland in Khurda district not too long ago.

Bird information Madhu Behera noticed a uncommon mutation generally known as ‘leucism’ within the Common Moorhen, a resident fowl of Mangalajodi, and despatched few images of the fowl to former honorary wildlife warden of Khurda Subhendu Mallik who recognized the mutation as ‘partially leucism.’

“The aberrantly coloured Common Moorhen has white feathers in its wings and body next to normal-coloured ones that makes it partially leucistic. On the other hand, a normal coloured Common Moorhen as per eBird India has big white oval patches under the tail and white streaks along flanks. Adult has red bill with yellow tip,” Mallik stated.

He stated Common Moorhen is also referred to as Eurasian Moorhen. The fowl is frequent in contemporary and brackish marshes in addition to ponds and lakes.

Bird guides claimed that the leucistic Common Moorhen has been sighted for the primary time in Odisha and that is the second sighting in India. In 2017, a leucistic Common Moorhen was noticed at Vellayani-Punchakari wetland in Thiruvananthapuram district of Kerala.
