India is closely monitoring a series of unusual military developments in neighboring Bangladesh that could impact regional security, especially concerning the vulnerable Siliguri Corridor. An Antonov AN-124 cargo aircraft from Azerbaijan landed in Dhaka with its payload and purpose kept secret, and its flight path notably avoided Iranian airspace, suggesting a sensitive operation.

Furthermore, Bangladesh Navy Chief Admiral Mustaq Ahmed held significant meetings in Karachi, Pakistan, focusing on increased naval cooperation and defense industry partnerships. This strengthening of ties with Pakistan, coupled with other recent events, is seen as a notable shift in Bangladesh’s defense posture.

Adding to the complex geopolitical picture, a U.S. military C-130 Hercules transported over a hundred American soldiers to Chattogram. This city’s proximity, less than 100 kilometers from India’s critical Siliguri Corridor, is a major concern for New Delhi. The presence of U.S. military personnel in such a sensitive location, without a clear public explanation, has heightened unease.

Security analysts suggest Bangladesh is actively cultivating distinct military alliances: deepening defense ties with Pakistan for shipbuilding and technology, securing training and logistics from the United States, and potentially sourcing equipment from Azerbaijan. These converging military activities near India’s strategic eastern gateway present a new dimension of regional complexity and potential security challenges for India.
