Supreme Court Petition Filed by AIMPLB to Block ‘Umeed’ Portal and Protect Waqf Act Challenges

The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) has filed a petition in the Supreme Court to block the government’s ‘Umeed’ portal, which the Board says is unlawful and represents contempt of court. The AIMPLB wants the portal suspended until the Supreme Court has decided on legal challenges to the Waqf Act 2025. The Board’s national spokesperson, Dr. SQR Ilyas, explained that the portal’s launch, despite repeated appeals, and the mandatory registration of Waqf properties, is exerting unlawful pressure. The Board has highlighted several legal and constitutional flaws in the portal, asserting that the Waqf Act 2025 is under review by the Supreme Court and has been rejected by various groups, including Muslims and minority communities. The AIMPLB previously called for a symbolic protest, asking people to switch off lights for 15 minutes to show their opposition to amendments in the Waqf law.
